Bob Shelton has taught art and film studies at the
collegiate level for the past forty years. His art has been featured in over 100 regional and national juried exihibitions and won numerous awards. He is listed on Who's Who in American Art.
His film courses led him to write a two-volume text for his students. A hard-bound version was published by the Mellen Press and a soft-bound version was created for text use. The text was premiered at the 2003 Cannes Film Festival.
My approach to visual art has never been vague or capricious. I usually know what I want from an artwork from the start, developing pre-structures and associations with the developing forms. Graphic works are perceived as part of a numerical series with subtitles. Those series are: RITUAL, ICON, CINEMA, BARRIER, PROBE, WINDOW and ESCAPADE; and are executed in a stenciled enamel assembly process. The paintings feed off the graphic titles, expanding upon the particular implication, and are oil on canvas. My hope is to elicit a sense of wonder from the viewer – and at best, a degree of intrigue.
